English Study with PODCAST
백만년만의 포스팅. 다사다난한 일상이지만, 일단 주제에 집중하기로 하자.
영어 자체보다는 영어공부 방법에 더 심혈을 기울이는addict.
(언젠간 영어학원 차릴려고 그러나..-_-;)
여태껏 내 영어 공부 방법을 보면..
1) TV series를 이용한 즐기면서 하는 공부
2) LEFA 수강 경험을 통한 반복학습의 중요성 깨달음
3) NEXUS 출판사의 ECO BOOK시리즈를 이용한 저렴한 공부
의 과정을 거쳤다고 볼 수 있다.
물론, 그 어느 것도 충실히 하진 못해서 현재의 영어실력은 매우 어중간한 상태.
흥미도 면에서 보면 단연1)이 좋지만, 1)의 단점은 너무 공부할 분량이 많다는 것이다. 에피소드 한편이40분 정도인데, BOB(Band Of Brothers)같은 군대 드라마가 아닌 이상..스크립트의 길이는 한편을 일주일동안 공부하기도 약간 벅찰 정도. 문제는 하나의 에피소드를 너무 오래 붙들고 있으면 금방 지루해 진다는 것.
2)의 경우, 언어 학습에 있어 반복훈련이 얼마나 중요한지 깨달을 수 있는 좋은 계기였긴 하지만. 인간적으로 많이 후진 학원 시설과, 구닥다리 느낌이 나는 교재에 직장생활로 인해 여의도로의 접근성이 떨어진 것도 지속할 수 없었던 이유.
3)의 교재도 깔끔하고 분량도 적당하긴 하나, 굉장히 지루했다. 아무래도 대놓고 가르쳐야 겠다는 의도로 만들어진 내용들이 그런 지루함을 느끼게 했던 거 같다.
그러나, 최근 addict.은 이 모든 방법의 단점을 뛰어 넘은(?) 새로운 영어 학습 방법을 발견하였으니 이름하야 “English Study with PODCAST~”두둥~
누가 보기에도 최신 테크놀러지와 gadget에 환장하는 얼리아답터인 addict.이지만, 의외로 새로운 흐름에 보수적인 면도 꽤나 많다. 오히려 새로움에 대한 추구에 따른 피로감때문인지 어느 부분에선 귀차니즘이 얼리 기질을 눌러 버리곤 한다. 덕분에 IPOD관련 제품을 4개(구형 U2pod, 4세대 40GB, 4세대 60GB, Shuffle 1세대)나 가지고 있으면서 PODCAST가 뭔지 아무 생각이 없었으니…
PODCAST에 대해 관심을 가지게 된 것은, 해야 할 일을 쌓아 놓은 채 정신적인 도피행각을 벌이던 중 이글루 블로그들을 돌아다니다 우연히 이곳(http://gatorlog.com/)을 알게 되었다. 이 블로그안에 있는 <블로그로 배우는 영어>라는 섹션(?)에서 소개된 podcast들을 들어보기 위해, iTunes를 깔아놓고 단 한번도 클릭해 본적이 없는 PODCAST 메뉴를 클릭하게 되었고….결국 그 날 하루는 일 하나도 못하고(대신 나중에 야근으로 때우고..-_-;) PODCAST의 세계를 탐험할 수 밖에 없었다. 아마 이 세계를 처음 접했을 때의 느낌은 P2P의 태동기에 처음으로 냅스터에 접속했을 때의 느낌과 비슷했던 거 같다.
…젠장 세상은 이렇게 빨리 변해가고 있구나.
벌써 미국에선 PODCAST가 아예 뉴미디어의 하나로 각광 받고 있고, 블로그와 더불어 자발적인 개인이 생산해내는 중요한 컨텐츠로 인식되고 있는데…나는 이제서야 이 존재를 알다뉘..T_T
PODCAST를 비롯한 iTunes Store의 전모를 이제서야 파악하게 된 나는, 아이리버나 삼성 따위가 아무리 기발한 mp3 플레이어를 만들어 낸다 하더라도 애플에게는 게임이 안된다는 것을(물론 국내에서야 통하겠지만) 느낄 수 있었다. 푸키에 의하면, 이것은 결국 마인드(애플은 곡당 1센트 정도만 챙기고, 나머지는 다 음반사와 아티스트에게 갈 수 있도록 하는 원가구조)의 승리라고 하는데…요새 읽고 있는 <웹 2.0경제학>과 <Google Story>탓인지, 다시 한번 애플이 위대해 보인다(덕분에 다시 맥..을 사고 싶다. 무척. 무척. T_T)
PODCAST는 그 장르도 개수도 장난 아니게 많다. 이중에서 영어 공부를 위해 필요한 PODCAST를 내 기준으로 골라봤다.

영작할 때 범하기 쉬운 실수나, 문법적 오류, 단어의 뉘앙스 차이를 설명해 준다. 속도가 좀 빨라서 초보자들에겐 약간 어려울 수도 있지만, 내용자체가 영작시 좋은 팁들로 이루어져 있고, 대본도 제공이 됨으로 활용도는 무척 높다. 한번 업데이트 분량이 5분이내로 부담없다.

캐스터는 남아프리카 케이프 타운에 거주한다고 하는데, 하루에 2단어씩 설명과 예문, 동의어와 반의어를 방송한다. 단어 수준은 꽤 높아서 토익보다는 GRE, TOEFL준비생들에게 유용할 듯. 대본은 없지만, 워낙 천천히 또 또박또박 말을 하기 때문에 청취에 큰 어려움은 없다.

Coaching이 아닌 Teaching때문이라면 더 이상 돈 들일 일이 없겠구나..하는 생각하게 해준 PODCAST. 영어회화가 필요한 모든 분야를 다루고 있으면서 미국문화 전반에 관한 이야기도 <English Café>라는 코너를 통해서 커버한다. 기본적인 테마 대화가 있고, 이것을 캐스터가 문장의 의미와 단어의 쓰임새를 중심으로 천천히 설명해 준다. 그리고 마지막 부분엔 빠른 속도로 테마 대화를 다시 읽어 준다. 구성도 짜임새가 있고, 설명도 적절하다. 업데이트 속도도 빠른편이라 사실 다 따라가기가 벅찰 정도인데(완벽히 소화한다고 가정했을 때), 유일한 단점이라면 대본을 전부 제공하지 않는다는 점. 본문 대화는 웹사이트에서 제공하지만, 전체 대본은 한달에 10불씩 결제한 사람에게 제공한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이렇게 훌룡한 컨텐츠를 공짜로 활용할 수 있다는 점에선 더할 나위 없이 고마운 곳.

ESL과 같은 수준의 짜임새 있는 구성이 돗보이는 PODCAST. 다만, 이곳은 Business 분야에 집중하고 있다. 뉴스를 기준으로 보면, 메인 테마가 있고, 여기에 대한 해설이 있다. 메인 테마는 여러가지 최신 비즈니스 이슈를 리포트 하며(꽤나 천천히 또박또박 읽어준다), 이 후엔 다양한 억양의 3인이 이슈에 관해서 또는 사용된 어휘나 표현에 대해서 이야기를 나눈다. 딱딱한 강의식이 아닌 3인의 자연스러운 대화로 이루어져 있다는 것이 최대 장점. 이 부분에 대한 대본은 없지만, 어휘설명은 정의와 예문을 함께 제공한다.

로리가 진행하는 Real English Conversation. 꽤나 독특한 주제를 잡아서 영국 억양의 남자와 이런 저런 대화를 나눈다. 특별한 대본 없이 자유롭게 대화를 나누기 때문에 상당히 생동감이 있는 것이 최대 장점이며, 이런 자연스러운 대화를 전부 대본에 정리해 두었기 때문에 공부하기도 편리하다. 여기에 부록으로 제공되는 Vocabulary의 해설이 매우 충실한 편으로 메인 대화의 문맥에 맞춰 해설해 준다.

이 6개의 PODCAST를 어떻게 구성해서 공부하냐는 것은 개인의 환경과 역량에 따라 천차만별이겠지만, addict.의 경우는…
Just Vocabulary의 일주일치와 나머지 5개 PODCAST에피소드 하나씩 모으면 65분 정도의 분량이 나온다. 이것을 일주일 내내 열심히 듣는다. 하루에 JV의 하루치와 1개씩의 에피소드에 대해서 Dictation 겸 Script 공부를 하다 보면 일주일이 금방가고, 주말 하루는 전체 스크립트에 대해 총정리를 한다.
이 정도만 꾸준히 하면, 세계 어느 곳에서의 English Class에도 뒤지지 않는 훌륭한 개인학원을 다니는 셈이 된다. 항상 문제는 ‘How to’보다는 ‘How long’과 ‘How often’에 있는 법이니까. 특히 어학에 있어서는…(이러면서 맨날 ‘How to’에 대해서 궁리만 하는 addict.은 뭐하는 놈인지..쿨럭)
의지만 있다면, 돈 없이도 영어공부 정도는 배터지도록(?) 열심히 할 수 있는 세상이다. 처음 냅스터를 접했을 때..아 이젠 문화생활엔 돈이 안 드는 세상이구나..란 생각을 했었는데(이것은 현재 틀린 명제가 되어 버렸다. 물론, 예전보다 저렴해진 것도 사실이고), PODCAST를 통해 점점 교육도 돈이 안 드는 세상이…(머 물론 이 역시 과장된 생각이고)
문제는…여러가지 Video PODCAST를 보고 있으니…비디오팟이 사고 싶어지며, 애플이 다시 좋아지다 보니 맥북과 아이맥 혹은 맥미니라도 지르고 싶은 욕구가 불같이 일어나고 있다는 것…T_T
참아야 하느니..참는 자에게 잔고가 너희 것이리…T_T

그렇지 않아도 IPOD의 세계에 입문할까말까 한쪽발만 들이고 고민하던 차에 직격탄을 날려주셨습니다. 유저인 동생 옆구리를 찔러서 대강 맛이라도 본 다음에 완전히 빠져보렵니다. 제게는 그야말로 파산신의 포스팅인 셈이군요.T-T;;
그저 파일을 iPod에 담기 위해서 어쩔 수 없이 사용하는 귀찮은 프로그램 정도로
인식되고 있다는 점이 참 아쉽습니다.
애플의 파워는 iPod에 있는 것이 아니고,
iTunes와 그에 묶인 서비스/컨텐츠에 있는 것인데 말이지요.

키르난/반갑습니다~ 머 굳이 ipod 아니셔도..어떤 mp3p라도 사용가능한 컨텐츠들입니다. ipod과 iTunes를 사용하면 조금 더 편리해 질 뿐이죠..정작 저는 아이팟 나두고 아이리버 H120으로 듣고 있답니다. -_-;;;; (아이팟은 재생목록 편집이 귀찮고..T_T 구간반복이 안되서 말이죠)

인식"하고 있던 사용자입니다. ㅋ 그러니 그저 아이팟은 이쁘고 클릭휠이 편리한 mp3p정도에 불과했던 거죠. 이번 발견은 저에게도 뭔가 새로운 insight를 주더군요. ^_^
